Couplets

Back when I was in middle school, I discovered Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I became a fan of the character Isadora Quagmire and the fact that she was a poet. This series introduced me to couplets, and I began attempting to write some of my own. A lot I disregarded, which looking back I regret. However, here is a collection of some that I have written as of June 30, 2024.

I’d rather eat a bowl of sandThen wear another rubber band

I hope this will be a way to begin again
And connect with the girl I was back then

Sweet tea, fries, and buttered buns
Lunch with family is always fun

We are all capable of mistakes
And the knowledge of this can make a heart quake

No matter what I try to do
I can’t seem to write what I feel about you

No one in my life has your kind of light
And looking in your eyes is such a sight

On the interstate you take your life in your hands
And you can’t feel safe until the car lands

I’m not someone who can give out love professions
As easily as if they were some kind of confection

Surgery on the brain
Makes one feel insane

Petty Drama no longer has a place in my life
Especially since there are real sources of strife

Like me, love me, or leave me
Which one is it gonna be

How can we choose who should run the nation
When neither is deserving of the vocation

I’ve written a lot of couplets of late
They’ve been so fun to fabricate

While I try to be as strong as the mighty tree
I get jealous of those who can live fancy-free

When I stopped caring what others thought
Life came to be more of what it ought

Maybe not being so nice
Is about to become my new vice

After all these years it feels bizarre
To look at you and not know who you are

When all your friends suddenly become enemies
You don’t need to look far for what the cause may be

Spending an hour in the MRI machine
Borders on being obscene

Maybe when I’m finally dead
What I meant will sink into your head
